Tip 1

Start with a good quality yam. Look for yams that are firm and free of blemishes.

Place the yams in a baking dish and pour the butter and sugar mixture over the top.

For a classic southern style candied yams, make a sauce by combining maple syrup, butter, and vanilla extract

If you want a bit more sweetness, mix together melted marshmallows and the sugar mixture before adding it to the yams.

For a twist, use white or light brown sugar instead of dark brown.

Ingredients

  • 6 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 & 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup butter solid
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Southern Style Candied Yams

Preheat the oven to 400°F. While your oven is preheating, get your butter brown sugar, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon. Place your butter in a pot to melt on medium, as your butter begins to melt add in the brown sugar, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon. Stir the caramel until slightly thick and sticky, leave to simmer for 1 minute.

Peal your sweet potatoes and cut them into medium chunks. Spread into a foil pan and pour the caramel over the potatoes into the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes occasionally stirring the potatoes. Add time as needed for softness.
